road trip to KT

Mason with his drums, snapped by KT

So yeah, I was supposed to leave yesterday but these days things don't normally go as planned. The plan was to get ready Monday and Tuesday and leave Wednesday - but on Sunday I fell and Monday I re-cooped.

We had a gate up at my sisters so that the toddlers wouldn't go up the steps and pony legs didn't make it over that morning. Unfortunately I was holding Jack - so in that moment when I realized I was going down I had a split second to decide how I was going to land. I didn't want to land on Jack or baby number two in my belly so I swiveled my body around and took the impact of the fall on my legs and hips. Thankfully Jack wasn't hurt at all which was all I cared about. He cried for five seconds and I shook from the fear of what could have happened for thirty minutes. It's our first close call with the baby. So I was in a lot of pain that night and the next day - I have plenty of padding but that hurt.

I was a good girl Tuesday and cleaned out my car while the little guy took a nap. Wednesday I took stock of everything I brought on this trip and had flashbacks of my husband surveying my things with a sort of mild horror in Colorado before we left. I think he's gotten used to many things I do but the amount of things I think I need on a trip (or in general really) is still amazing. I hate to admit it but - "What was I thinking?!" I'm reminded of that song by Jack Johnson - the part that I relate to is where he says, "...people, all awkward with their things." I'm quite awkward with my things at the moment and I'm going to start giving things away. If you've seen something of mine you like lately just let me know. My husband (a minimalist) is silently rejoicing as he reads this.

Today Jack and I drive down to Florida to see my sister KT, her husband Ryan and baby Mason. I'm not enthused about another road trip alone with the baby but I'm really excited to get some time with Kate and her little family.

Before I go I just have to mention food again because it's such a big part of my life - especially with the great pleasure that pregnancy cravings relieved brings. I found a marvelous place while rabbit-trailing through art blogs one day. It fulfills my first and greatest hunger, which, is words. I thought it was just simply a food blog but no, it's a very happy place to go - writing that will inspire and delight you (wonderful stories!), gorgeous photos and such enticing recipes. The Traveler's Lunchbox is worth the visit.

We've already tried: Chocolate Gelato to eat while we watched the Oscars. It was yummy.

I also hope to attempt:

Moroccan-Spiced Poussins with Saffron, Honey and Tomato Jam

Apple, Hazelnut and Vanilla Crisp

Jamaican Breakfast Soup

Some random quotes from the last couple weeks...

"His ears are like flags." - Ezra in reference to Jack one morning

"I like how the babies just lounge in their chairs, they look like little old people." - Kelly in reference to My Jack and Eliot sitting in their swings together

"I don't know why it's so hard for me to get rid of things...like tree bark for instance." -Kelly while packing to go to North Carolina

In reference to washing stuffed animals:

Me: The hippo falls on the floor, the hippo gets washed.

Amy: I wash our stuffed animals when someone pees on them.

See you soon Mason...

I'm thinking you have enough to spare!

Happy travels, trails and songs for Jack along the way while he watches his trees...

And there was much rejoicing.

Although, the ascetic life isn't for everyone.

U3 will be in my prayers today.

Okay, I have to side with your sister, Amy. If there are any significant bodily fluids on the stuffed animal, it gets washed. Drool is not significant.

And the floor just doesn't have enough dirty status to earn my time and effort washing each animal that gets on it. Thanks, Amy!

So are you updating this as you go along on your road trip (adding new content each time)? Just wondering, because the post keeps filtering to the top of the list of updates on Chattablogs. This is the first time I clicked on it.

That conversation with you and amy is hysterical.
I don't have a washer in the house so if someone pees on it, it goes in the trash, I am a wasteful person, I know.
But you made me smile with that one.

also, if you wash something too much and it turns into a lovey it will die prematurely. henry has a hippo, gary, who is much loved and often washed. i wish i hadn't been so germ conscious when gary was as new as my henry was because i think gary would have a little more zip to him than he does now. henry will be heartbroken if gary falls apart. and the idea of my patch job scares me.
